A few years ago, “creating with AI” meant asking a chatbot for a paragraph and then rewriting most of it. Today it’s part of almost every project I work on: websites, blog posts, images, even custom WordPress plugins. AI hasn’t replaced the work. It has changed how fast I can get from an idea to something real, and how much I can take on as a one-person shop.
Here’s how I use AI across each part of a build, what it does well, and where a person still needs to be in charge.
1. Websites: From Blank Page to First Draft, Fast
The hardest part of any website is the blank page. AI is very good at getting past it. I can describe a business, its customers and the feel it’s going for, and get back a sitemap, page outlines and a first pass at layout ideas in minutes instead of days.
- Planning: sitemaps, page structure and calls to action based on what the business actually sells.
- Design exploration: quick mockups, color palettes and type pairings to react to before anything gets built.
- Code help: custom CSS, small JavaScript features and fixes for the odd layout bug.
What AI doesn’t do is know your business. The final site still comes down to real decisions about your customers, your brand and what you want visitors to do next.
2. Blog Posts and Website Content
Content is where most small-business websites stall. Everyone knows they should be blogging; very few have time. AI makes the first draft painless: topic ideas, outlines, headings, meta descriptions and a solid starting draft.
The key is treating that draft as a starting point. The posts that work best add what only you can add: your experience, your local knowledge, real examples from your customers. AI gives you the structure; you give it the voice and the facts.
3. Images and Graphics
Custom images used to mean a photo shoot, a stock photo subscription or hours in a design app. Now AI can help produce featured images, social graphics, icons and illustrations that match a site’s colors and style. The image at the top of this post was designed with AI using this site’s own colors and fonts.
AI tools are also handy for everyday image chores: removing backgrounds, resizing, cleaning up product photos and creating variations for different platforms. A few tips:
- Keep a consistent style so your images look like they belong together.
- Use your brand colors and fonts rather than whatever the tool defaults to.
- Always add descriptive alt text for accessibility and SEO.
4. WordPress Plugins and Custom Tools
This is where AI has surprised me the most. Small, focused plugins that once took days to write can now be built, tested and refined much faster. I’ve used AI to help build tools like background image removal, a client content editor, chatbots and an e-signature plugin for contracts.
Building a plugin with AI still takes real development know-how. Someone has to decide what it should do, review the code, test it on a staging site, check it for security problems and keep it updated. AI speeds up the writing; it doesn’t replace the responsibility.
5. Everything in Between
Beyond the big pieces, AI helps with the small jobs that add up: writing product descriptions, drafting client emails, building proposals and contracts, summarizing analytics, brainstorming names and organizing project notes. Each one saves a few minutes, and together they free up hours each week for the work that matters.
Where People Still Matter Most
AI is a powerful assistant, but it isn’t the designer, the developer or the business owner. It can be confidently wrong, it doesn’t know your customers and it can’t take responsibility for what goes live on your site. The best results come from pairing AI’s speed with human judgment:
- Check the facts. Verify anything AI writes before it’s published.
- Keep your voice. Edit content so it sounds like you, not like everyone else.
- Test everything. Code, forms and plugins need real testing before they touch a live site.
- Protect privacy. Be careful about what customer or business data you paste into AI tools.
Start Creating with AI
AI has made it possible to build more, faster, without cutting corners on quality, as long as there’s an experienced person guiding it. Whether you need a new website, fresh content, custom images or a plugin built for exactly what your business does, I’d love to help you put these tools to work.
